Hi Karen,

I'm sorry to hear that you have to go through such a trying time. Your tumor is similar to mine, however mine is located underneath my left trigeminal nerve. The trigeminal nerve has three main branches that cover your facial area. Each branch has a function, although I cannot quote all of them. It sounds to me like your tumor is more involved with the nerve the communicates with your temporalis branch, which is the muscle your doctor is most likely referring to. I have an empty void there because my temporalis balled up after surgery. I now have temporomandibular disorder (TMD) also known as TMJ. There is a chance you might not have to lose that muscle, however it you do you can also have cosmetic surgery to fill the void. I'm actually considering that in the future myself. I wish you luck with your surgery and if you have anymore questions please feel free to contact me here. Take care and understand this is only a temporary bump in the road. Be strong and you'll do just fine!

Hi Travis, I was just diagnosed with a brain tumor, it is benign. Just seen doctor today. He thinks it is schwannoma, and believes its on the nerve that does my chewing. Says I might have to start chewing on one side of my face. My tumor is on the right side. I was wondering is this the same thing that you have. He warned me about a indent on the side of my head do to my chewing musle no longer working. I just needed to know some things before hand. Surgery is scheduled for end of May. Thanks for any help you can give me. Karen

My husband was just diagnosed with a trigeminal schwannoma last week. We have been referred to specialist in Portland. We still have a lot of unknowns but I really appreciate you guys sharing your story. It helps me see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Hi Amber,

This is Travis and I'm happy to hear your surgery went well. Keep positive and always look for the good in everything. My wife stresses that to me constantly and her advice has given me the strength to continue my fight. My eye has recovered very well, however it is not as perfect as I would like. Don't stress the regrowth so much, mine was caused by a faulty resection. I hope you also have a happy healthy 2011. If you need anything at all as far as information don't hesitate to ask.

I had surgery one month ago for a 3rd nerve schwannoma (occularmotor) (misdiagnosed as a skull base meningioma). It is great to see how well your eye recovered... I hope mine will go back to normal with time! Fortunately I had a supraorbital surgery so the scar is in my eyebrow and recovery was just about two weeks. I feel great but now am waiting for the next MRI, which I am worried about after reading about your regrowth...grrr. I hope all is well for your family and wish you a happy healthy 2011!
